If you are new to the Dutch system, also read how to buy a used car in the Netherlands as an expat.
1. Set a monthly budget
Include depreciation, insurance, road tax, fuel or charging, maintenance and tyres. The purchase price is only one part.
Read what a used car really costs per month.
2. Shortlist sensible models
Choose models that fit your use: city, family, motorway, towing or low cost. Avoid choosing only by brand image.
Use reliable used cars by budget as a starting point.
3. Check RDW and APK data
Use the licence plate to check RDW data, APK expiry and mileage status. Imported cars need extra history checks.
Read check APK history and mileage.
4. Ask for documents
Ask for service invoices, ownership documents, APK reports, import paperwork if relevant and proof of timing belt/chain work.
5. Test drive properly
Drive cold, warm, slow, fast and at parking speed. Test brakes, steering, clutch or automatic gearbox, electronics and air conditioning.
6. Negotiate with facts
Use missing maintenance, old tyres, short APK, overdue timing belt or market price as negotiation points.
7. Register and insure
Do not drive away without insurance. Registration transfer is done through RDW-approved channels. Keep the tenaamstellingscode safe.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most important check?
Mileage, APK/RDW data and service history together. One source is not enough.
Should I get an inspection?
For expensive cars, automatics, imports, hybrids and anything suspicious: yes.
Is buying from a dealer safer?
Often, but not automatically. Still check the car and the terms of warranty.
Can I buy without speaking Dutch?
Yes, but documents and adverts may be Dutch. RideIQ is built to make the Dutch used-car process easier to understand.
