Importing a used car from Germany or Belgium can be attractive: more choice, better equipment and sometimes sharper prices. But BPM, registration, inspections and missing history can erase the advantage.

For the broader process, read importing a car into the Netherlands.

What is BPM?

BPM is a Dutch vehicle tax due when registering many passenger cars in the Netherlands. For used cars, the amount depends on the car and depreciation calculation.

Always use current official Belastingdienst/RDW guidance or a specialist calculation. Do not rely on a seller’s optimistic estimate.

Germany versus Belgium

Germany often has a larger market and more high-spec cars. Belgium can be closer and easier logistically. In both cases, paperwork and history matter.

Ask for:

  • Registration documents.
  • Service records.
  • Mileage history.
  • Accident repair information.
  • Export documents.

Why imports can be risky

Dutch RDW history begins at Dutch registration. If the car was used abroad, Dutch mileage and APK history do not tell the full story.

Check foreign invoices, inspection records and damage history before importing.

Calculate total cost

Include:

  • Purchase price.
  • BPM.
  • Transport.
  • RDW inspection/registration.
  • Temporary plates or logistics.
  • Repairs needed for Dutch registration.
  • Time and risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is importing cheaper?

Sometimes, but only after BPM and all costs. Many attractive adverts lose their advantage after import costs.

Is a German car better maintained?

Not automatically. Some are excellent; others are high-mileage company cars. Documents matter.

Can RideIQ show imported cars?

RideIQ can surface import status for Dutch-listed cars where data is available, but imported history still requires documents.

Should I use an import specialist?

For expensive cars, EVs, plug-in hybrids or anything complex, specialist help can be worth it.
