A small automatic is ideal for Dutch cities: easy parking, relaxed traffic and lower running costs. But small automatics vary a lot. Some are smooth and reliable; others are slow, jerky or expensive to repair.

What to check

During the test drive, watch for:

  • Jerking when pulling away.
  • Vibration at parking speed.
  • Delayed reverse.
  • Whining or slipping.
  • Missing gearbox-service history.

Do not buy a small automatic that behaves badly just because it is cheap.

Toyota Yaris Hybrid

The Yaris Hybrid is one of the safest choices. It is efficient, easy to drive and has a strong reliability reputation.

Best for city and commuter use. Less ideal if you need family-car space.

Honda Jazz CVT

The Jazz is small outside and surprisingly practical inside. The CVT feel is different, so take a longer test drive.

Check CVT service history, rust on older cars and interior wear.

Suzuki Swift Automatic

The Swift is light, simple and more enjoyable than many small cars. Check the exact gearbox type and service history.

These are straightforward city cars. They are best for urban use and short commutes, not frequent long motorway trips.

Check air conditioning, brakes, tyres and signs of city parking damage.

Volkswagen Polo DSG
