Diesel used cars can look cheap in the Netherlands. The purchase price may be low, especially for larger cars. But Dutch road tax, environmental zones and resale risk can make a cheap diesel expensive.
Start with the numbers before you fall for the advert.
Diesel only works for the right mileage
Diesel makes most sense for high annual mileage, long motorway trips and towing. It makes little sense for short city trips.
Be careful if:
- You drive under 15,000 km per year.
- You mostly drive in cities.
- The car has a diesel particulate filter.
- You want easy resale in a few years.
Road tax is the big Dutch issue
Dutch motorrijtuigenbelasting is strongly affected by fuel type and weight. Diesel cars are often much more expensive per month than petrol cars.
Use the official Belastingdienst road-tax calculator before buying. Do not rely on the seller’s estimate.
Environmental zones and future access
Dutch cities can restrict older diesels. The rules depend on city, emissions class and vehicle type. If you commute into a city, check the current local rules before buying.
Older cheap diesels may be hard to sell later if access restrictions tighten.
Maintenance risks
Modern diesels can be excellent at long-distance driving, but expensive if used wrongly.
Watch for:
- DPF problems.
- EGR issues.
- Turbo wear.
- Injector problems.
- Short-trip use.
- Missing service history.
If the car was used for long motorway journeys and maintained properly, the risk is lower.
When diesel can still be smart
Diesel can be logical if you drive many motorway kilometres, need towing capacity or buy a well-maintained car at a price that reflects the higher tax.
Do the monthly comparison against petrol, hybrid and EV options. The cheapest advert is not always the cheapest car.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I buy a diesel in the Netherlands in 2026?
Only if your mileage and use pattern fit. For low-mileage private use, petrol or hybrid is often safer.
Why are used diesel cars cheap?
Because road tax, environmental-zone concerns and resale risk reduce demand.
Is diesel good for towing?
Often yes. Diesel torque can be useful for caravans or heavy loads, but tax and maintenance must still make sense.
What should I check first?
Road tax, emissions class, DPF/EGR history, service invoices and city access rules.
