Table of contents
The timing belt or chain is one of the most important maintenance questions on a used car. If it fails, engine damage can be severe.
The short rule: ask for proof. Not a promise, not "the previous owner said so", but invoices or digital service history.
What the timing system does
The timing system keeps the crankshaft and camshaft synchronised. If timing is wrong, valves and pistons can meet.
There are two common systems:
- Timing belt: usually has a replacement interval.
- Timing chain: often designed for long life, but not always trouble-free.
Neither is automatically better. The engine and service history matter.
Timing belts
A timing belt must usually be replaced after a set time or mileage. Time matters, not only kilometres.
Ask:
- When was it replaced?
- At what mileage?
- Was the water pump replaced too if relevant?
- Is there an invoice?
- When is it due next?
If there is no proof, assume it has not been done.
Timing chains
Timing chains are often described as maintenance-free. In practice, chains can stretch and guides or tensioners can fail.
Warning signs:
- Rattle at cold start.
- Engine warning light.
- Rough running.
- Poor oil-service history.
Good oil maintenance is especially important.
Use it in negotiation
If a belt is due soon, price it into your offer. If the chain sounds bad, do not treat it as a discount item; treat it as a reason for specialist inspection or walking away.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a timing chain better than a belt?
Not automatically. Some chains are excellent; some engines have chain problems. Belts are predictable when replaced on schedule.
When should a timing belt be replaced?
It depends on the exact engine. Check the official interval in years and kilometres.
Can I drive with unknown belt history?
That is a risk. If the interval may be overdue, replace it immediately or do not buy the car.
Can you always hear a bad chain?
No. Cold-start rattle is a warning sign, but not every issue is obvious.
