APK is the Dutch roadworthiness inspection. If a car fails APK, it does not automatically mean it is worthless. It does mean you need to understand the points, costs and legal situation before driving or buying.
APK is a minimum inspection
APK checks basic roadworthiness and environmental requirements. It is not a full mechanical inspection and not a guarantee that the car is good.
A car can pass APK and still have expensive maintenance ahead.
Common APK failure points
Typical issues include:
- Tyres.
- Brakes.
- Lighting.
- Suspension.
- Emissions.
- Corrosion.
- Windscreen damage.
Some are cheap. Others point to deeper problems.
Repair or walk away?
Repair can make sense if:
- The car is otherwise good.
- The repair estimate is clear.
- The price reflects the failure.
- There are no structural corrosion issues.
Walk away if the seller is vague, refuses inspection or the failure points suggest neglect.
Buying a car with failed APK
Be careful. You may not be allowed to drive it normally, insurance can be complicated and transport may be needed. Ask exactly what is legal and arrange proper transfer/transport.
Use APK history before viewing
Before buying, check APK history and mileage. Read check APK history and mileage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a failed APK a deal breaker?
Not always. Minor items can be fine if priced correctly. Structural or repeated issues are different.
Can I drive with failed APK?
Do not assume so. Check RDW rules and insurance before moving the car.
Is a fresh APK enough?
No. It is useful, but still not a full purchase inspection.
Can I negotiate with APK points?
Yes. Use real repair estimates, not guesses.
