Table of contents

The estate car is still one of the smartest family-car formats in the Netherlands. It is usually cheaper, lighter and more efficient than an SUV, while often offering a more useful boot.

Start with estate cars.

Why estates beat many SUVs

An estate is lower and often has a longer, more usable load space. That matters for buggies, dogs, sports bags and holidays.

SUVs are better for entry height. Estates are often better for space per euro.

Skoda Octavia Combi

The Octavia is the default practical choice: huge boot, wide availability and good value.

Check engine, DSG service history, ex-lease use and timing-belt/chain maintenance.

Toyota Corolla Touring Sports

The Corolla Touring Sports is excellent if you want low fuel use and strong reliability. Hybrid versions are popular and hold value well.

Volkswagen Golf Variant

The Golf Variant is comfortable and widely available. It is not as large as an Octavia, but feels refined.

Check TSI engine history, DSG behaviour and import status.

Kia Ceed Sportswagon and Hyundai i30 Wagon

These are rational, well-equipped and often good value. Check dealer history if warranty matters.

Ford Focus Wagon

The Focus Wagon is practical and good to drive. Check the exact engine and any relevant timing-belt issues.

Volvo V60

The V60 is comfortable and safe, but heavier and more expensive to run. Check tyres, road tax, maintenance and plug-in hybrid history.
