An automatic can make Dutch traffic much easier: city driving, traffic jams and daily commuting are more relaxed. But a bad automatic gearbox can be one of the most expensive used-car mistakes.
Start with automatic cars and use this checklist before you buy.
Automatic is not one technology
Used-car adverts often just say "automatic". That is not enough. The main types are:
- Torque-converter automatic: often smooth and strong.
- DSG or dual-clutch: fast and efficient, but service-sensitive.
- CVT: common in Japanese and hybrid cars.
- Automated manual: can feel jerky.
- Hybrid transmission: often robust in Toyota/Lexus models.
Ask which type the car has and research that exact engine/gearbox combination.
DSG and dual-clutch gearboxes
DSG gearboxes can be excellent, especially in Volkswagen Group cars. But clutch packs, mechatronics and software can become expensive.
During the test drive, check:
- Jerking when pulling away.
- Vibration at parking speed.
- Delayed reverse.
- Harsh shifts when warm.
- Proof of gearbox oil service if required.
If the seller says "they all do that", treat it as a warning sign.
CVT gearboxes
A CVT feels different. Engine revs may rise while speed builds gradually. That can be normal, especially in hybrids, but you must like the feel.
Check:
- Smooth pull-away.
- No slipping sensation.
- No whining beyond normal behaviour.
- Correct oil/service history.
- Behaviour when cold and warm.
Hybrid automatics
Many Toyota and Lexus hybrids are effectively automatic and have a strong reliability reputation. Kia and Hyundai hybrids are also popular.
Still check:
- Hybrid battery warranty.
- Brake condition.
- Service history.
- Accident/import history.
For broader drivetrain choice, read electric or hybrid in the Netherlands.
Test-drive checklist
Do more than a short loop:
- Start cold.
- Shift from P to D and R.
- Drive slowly in traffic.
- Test parking manoeuvres.
- Accelerate to motorway speed.
- Repeat slow pull-away when warm.
Any slip, clunk, hesitation or vibration deserves specialist inspection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a used automatic a good idea?
Yes, if the gearbox type is known, service history is clear and the test drive is smooth.
Is DSG reliable?
It can be, but it is less forgiving than a manual gearbox. Buy only with convincing service history and good behaviour when cold and warm.
Is CVT bad?
No. It is different. Some CVTs are very reliable, especially in hybrids, but the driving feel is not for everyone.
Should gearbox oil have been changed?
It depends on the gearbox. If the manufacturer specifies an interval, you want proof. For older automatics, specialist advice is useful.
