Table of contents

A used hybrid can be an excellent Dutch car: efficient in towns, easy in traffic and often reliable. But full hybrids, plug-in hybrids and mild hybrids are very different.

Start with hybrid cars and use this guide for your shortlist.

Choose the right hybrid type

The main types:

  • Full hybrid: no plug, can drive short distances electrically.
  • Plug-in hybrid: bigger battery, must be charged to make sense.
  • Mild hybrid: small electrical assistance, not true electric driving.

For most buyers, a full hybrid is simplest. A plug-in hybrid only works well if you can charge often.

Toyota Yaris Hybrid

The Yaris Hybrid is small, efficient and has a strong reputation. It is ideal for city driving and commuting, but limited for families.

Toyota Corolla Hybrid

The Corolla Hybrid is a strong all-rounder. The Touring Sports version is especially useful for families and long-term ownership.

Search Toyota Corolla Hybrid.

Toyota Prius

The Prius is rational rather than exciting: efficient, practical and proven. Check for taxi or heavy business use on high-mileage cars.

Kia Niro Hybrid

The Niro is popular because it feels crossover-like but remains efficient. Check warranty history, tyres, brakes and service records.

Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid

The Ioniq is less fashionable than an SUV but often efficient and good value. Check the DCT automatic and maintenance history.

Lexus CT and UX

Lexus combines Toyota hybrid technology with more comfort. Prices can be higher, but reliability and finish are strong reasons to consider one.

Plug-in hybrids

Plug-in hybrids are only cheap to run if you charge them. Without charging, they carry extra weight and complexity.

RVO notes that from 2026 cars with CO2 emissions of 1 to 50 g/km no longer receive the previous MRB discount, so check current tax rules before buying.
